Foreigner students made presentations with such subjects as ▲A plan to develop rural communities through environmental protection (Myanmar), ▲An inclusive social project for people with albinism (Tanzania), ▲A sustainable community-based tourism industry project in Lombok (Indonesia), ▲A project to improve meal and guarantee healthy life (Congo), ▲ A plan for further expansion of cooperative rice value chain in Ponga and Khapro (Malawi), ▲ A plan to increase community income through degradable plastic products made from cassava husk waste (Indonesia), and ▲ A child education project in rural areas (Guinea) and shared their opinions.

In the contest, Zambian Team won first place with a presentation on “Youth Saemaul Education and Fisheries Project in Kapu.” Siame Jairous (41, Department of Public Policy Leadership, Master’s 3rd term), representative of Zambian team, said, “I came to study at YU PSPS with the conviction that Saemaul Undong, which was the foundation of Korea's economic development, would also help the development of Zambia. Preparations for this event gave me an opportunity to deeply think about the strategies and plans for community development with application of Saemaul Undong. After graduation, I hope to have an opportunity to apply it in practice after returning to my home country.”

Dean LEE Hee-wook of YU PSPS managed the contest and said, “Saemaul Studies” established by YU through decades of education and research has great value as a practical study. This is why it is most important for foreigner students majoring in Saemaul Studies and International Development to think about establishment of action plans that may be applied for development of their own countries based on their theoretical knowledge. The knowledge and experiences obtained in YU PSPS will help development of their countries and communities."

YU PSPS was established in 2011 to cultivate Saemaul leaders of developing countries. Foreigner students studying in PSPS consist of public officials planning policies in respective countries, employees of public institutions, social activists, and professional workers, etc. differently from students of faculties or graduate schools. Until 808 students from 71 countries entered PSPS and 724 students from 66 countries received master’s degrees of “Saemaul Studies,” etc. and are working as main policy drafters, international development professionals, and Saemaul Undong leaders in central ministries/offices, public organizations, and international development NGO, etc. Currently, 43 international students from 19 countries are studying.

Meanwhile, Rotary International District 3700 Cheongdo Rotary Club (Chairman KIM Byung-soo) sponsored scholarships to encourage foreigner students who participated in “National/Regional Development Action Plan Contest for Students” of PSPS
