100 persons from 12 universities completed on/off-line training and enhanced theoretical/practical capability for autonomous driving.

A part of Local Government & University Cooperation Based Regional Innovation Project (RIS)

[February 07, 2023]

Students from 12 universities in Daegu/Gyeongbuk areas including YU and Kyungpook National University gathered to perform model electric vehicle autonomous driving missions.

YU’s Future Car Conversion Component Project Team held “1st university students’ model electric vehicle autonomous driving contest.” The contest was provided for local university students to get professional knowledge and strengthen practical capability through short-term concentrated training and contest on autonomous driving that is the core technology in the 4th industrial revolution era.

The contest is a part of Local Government & University Cooperation Based Regional Innovation Project  (Regional Innovation System, hereinafter referred to as RIS) for which KRW 331.2 billion of budget was input for recent five years. YU is the central university of RIS Project being implemented by Daegu-Gyeongbuk RIS and leads    Future Car Conversion Component Project.

The contest was held in Daegu/Gyeongbuk Training Center of Small and Medium Business Corporation in Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongbuk on the 3rd February and 100 students of 28 teams from 12 universities participated. The participants obtained the theoretical and practical knowledge on manufacture of autonomous driving vehicles through on/off-line training before the contest. They completed training on basic theory of autonomous driving vehicles, practice for disassembling and structuring model electric vehicles, autonomous driving sensors and data, and autonomous driving algorithm and programming, etc. and each team designed autonomous driving programs using model electric vehicles. Especially, for four days before the contest, they enhanced completion levels of their designed autonomous driving model electric vehicles and finished driving tests on the tracks installed in the training center through camp training.

In the contest held for three days, final ranks were determined by summing mission performance points for lane driving, signal lamps, dynamic obstacles, and walkers, etc. as well as track driving records of autonomous driving model electric vehicles manufactured by the teams. The team of Kyungpook National University took the 1st place, two teams from Daegu University took most excellence awards, and three teams from YU took excellence awards.

Manager SA Jong-yeop of YU’s Future Car Conversion Component Project Team (Professor of Department of Future Car Engineering) said, “Students would have the opportunities to obtain basic and professional knowledge through the busy schedule to receive theory training and design autonomous driving electric vehicles in a short time. This is the 2nd RIS Project and the program is being systemized. I will try so that RIS Project of YU becomes the success model of local innovation project by making clear performances of the project year by year.”
