Introduction

School of Chemical Engineering concentrates on educating students to make professionals required in the display industries, which are now the nation's most important industries, chemical, IT·energy and Biomaterial. For meeting these requirements, school of chemical engineering established four majors, which are Major of Polymer & Biomaterials, Major of Chemical Engineering Systems, Chemical Engineering for Convergence and Chemical Engineering for energy.

The school is currently composed of twenty seven full-time professors, three honorary professors, sixteen international research professors, seven adjunct professors and six staffs. Their job is to train students to make ready-to-work engineers for the chemical, IT·energy, bio materials, and display industries as well as other conventional chemical and materials-related industries.

All these efforts resulted in the Korea's first engineering education program accredited by ABEEK (Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea) in 2001. Since then, a lot of students have been educated in the most upgraded Korean engineering education system. Since 2007, graduates from this ABEEK program are acknowledged internationally in the most developed countries. Therefore, the door is wide open for them to prominent Korean or international companies. Furthermore, in 2004, this school was selected as one of the Korean Government-supported New University Regional Innovation(NURI) programs, receiving one billion won each year for the last five years to support the regional display industry technically and to supply well-trained engineers. More than 40% of students have been recipients of scholarships and the educational equipments and facilities have been upgraded to become one of the most prominent chemical engineering departments in the nation. In 2009, the school became the axis of four-departments coalition and was selected as the Green Energy Leading Regional-Industry Research and Education Center.

School of Chemical Engineering has achieved a lot of goals not only in its undergraduate program but also in its graduate program. About 86 graduate students including both M.S. and Ph.D. courses are studying in various research fields. The graduate program of the school has also made a rapid progress by being selected as the Korean Government-supported 2nd stage Brain Korea 21st Century (BK21) program on display materials(2006~2013) and BK21 Plus program on IT·energy materials and processing(2013~2020). About 33% of the graduate students are from abroad and about 61% of graduate courses are being taught in English. Note that all the full-time students receive a full scholarship. Research covers every state-of-the-art technologies closely related to NT, IT, ET and BT which are expected to lead the 21st century.

This school was established as the Department of Applied Chemistry in Daegu University (one predecessor of Yeungnam University) in 1947, which was the second time in chemical engineering (or similar) department in Korea. In 1967, it became the Department of Chemical Engineering. From it the Department of Applied Chemistry (later Department of Industrial Chemistry) was separated but was unified into School of Chemical Engineering and Technology in 1996, which was re-named to School of Chemical Engineering in 2004. For more than 60 years, it has graduated more than 6,000 students, forming an axis of chemical engineering in Korea.

CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."

The General Chemistry(I) introduces the basic concepts of the properties, constitution, structure and the reaction of matters, which is essential in modern chemistry, physics, biology and engineering.

Introduces classical mechanics. PRACTICAL CHINESE(I)
This course is for students just beginning to learn Chinese. The most difficult aspect of learning Chinese is pronunciation. So, first of all, in this course students will learn how to pronounce Chinese correctly. Then, through topics of daily life conversation, students will learn the basic communication skills Chinese as well as basic grammar.

PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH
The aim of the course is to help students develop basic English verbal skills in real life situations. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with basic English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to practice speaking English utilizing basic English structures. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGN
This subject invokes the interests of freshman engineer to engineering prior to regular engineering subjects. Creative problem solving skills are taught in the class such as brain storming, generation, analysis, practice, evaluation, and improvement of idea through minimum theory and various design projects, etc. Various projects for visual thinking and drawing, power writing skills, model bridge design, are carried out to operate, evaluate the performance of students on group base competition and thus enhances teamwork and communication skills. By taking this course, freshmen begin to have interests in engineering design and can develop creative problem solving skill, and eventually develop strong desire to continue engineering career.

ACADEMIC ENGLISH
The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

Continuation of General Chemistry(I) and a terminal sequence in chemistry for students requiring two courses in chemistry ; theories of acids and bases, ionic equilibrium, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, covalent bonds, metals and coordination chemistry, fundamentals of organic chemistry.

LIFE SCIENCE (1)
In this course, students learn the topics of cell biology, structure, and function, reproduction, genetics, physiology, development, diversity, evolution, and ecology. This is an introductory course designed for students who plan to take further coursework in the life sciences, including biology majors and minors, premedical students, wildlife majors, and others. The ultimate aims are to offer students with a working knowledge and an understanding of (1) the chemical basis of life, (2) how energy is harvested, used and transformed in cells, (3) basic patterns of inheritance and modern biotechnology protocols, and (4) the principle of evolution and the origin of species.

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
Molecular biology is the branch of biology that deals with the molecular basis of biological activity. This field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry. Molecular biology chiefly concerns itself with understanding the interactions between the various systems of a cell, including the interactions between the different types of DNA, RNA and protein biosynthesis as well as learning how these interactions are regulated.

Organic chemistry (1) is one of the required subjects in the program. As prerequisite course for dyeing chemistry, textile chemistry, and polymer chemistry, organic chemistry deals with the moleculer structure, reactions, and properties of organic compounds.

1. Summary of the course This course is to let the students to set the career goal at the early stage of university life through systematic and continuous counselling and instruction on CRM achievement and change of career designed by the students after the admission to the university. This course is to let the students attain career management method and edit, complement and confirm the CRM in a systematic manner by self analysis and analysis of employment competence while the course is being taught. Also, this course is to utilize video lecture as the secondary teaching material to let the students have competency in employment. 2. Course objectives This course is to assist to the enrolled students in designing their own employment plan for themselves by the education of drafting application materials for employment (resume, statement of purpose and application forms), communication skills and presentation skills. Furthermore, the course ultimate goal of guiding the students to systematically design (manage) CRM at each grade of the university with the counselling by the supervising professor until the time of graduation.

BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY
Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes in living organisms, including living matter. Much of biochemistry deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules ?although increasingly processes rather than individual molecules are the main focus.

POLYMERS IN LIFE
Polymeric bio-material major starts many subjects related to macromolecules in the third grade due to the academic speciality, and students lack basic knowledge of polymers, which makes the students difficult to understand the major in depth. In order to solve these fundamental problems, The major opened “Polymers in Life” as a subject to introduce the general contents related to macromolecules in the second semester of the second year. This course teaches the definition of polymers and how macromolecules are made, the difference in their properties, the simple method of analyzing various thermo-chemicals of macromolecules, as well as the physical properties of polymers what they are used for in everyday life.

This subject covers the fundamental information concerning green energy technology, including the introduction of green energy, resources of energy and its supply & demand, fossil fuel and its environmental effect, nuclear energy, photovoltaics, fuel cell, battery and C1 chemistry. CAREER DESIGN
1. Summary of the course This course is to let the students to set the career goal at the early stage of university life through systematic and continuous counselling and instruction on CRM achievement and change of career designed by the students after the admission to the university. This course is to let the students attain career management method and edit, complement and confirm the CRM in a systematic manner by self analysis and analysis of employment competence while the course is being taught. Also, this course is to utilize video lecture as the secondary teaching material to let the students have competency in employment. 2. Course objectives This course is to assist to the enrolled students in designing their own employment plan for themselves by the education of drafting application materials for employment (resume, statement of purpose and application forms), communication skills and presentation skills. Furthermore, the course ultimate goal of guiding the students to systematically design (manage) CRM at each grade of the university with the counselling by the supervising professor until the time of graduation.

ENGINEERING MATH AND COMPUTER PACKAGE LABORATORY
This course teaches the way to solve the engineering problems via mathematical methods and students can get the ability of logical way of thought. It is a series course with the course of Engineering Mathematics which will be offered at every the first semester. It is composed with the remaining part of the subjects after the first semesters of Engineering Mathematics and the symbolic mathematical solving methods with computer. We may use the Mathematic or Maple as the course ware and the comprarison procedures between analytic and computational solutions also should be included in this course.

FLUID MECHANICS IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Fluid Mechanics is one of the basic courses in Chemical Engineering and necessary to understand separation processes, reaction engineering, plant design, and etc. In this course static and flow properties of the fluid and their mathematical analysis will be discussed and be applied to the problems occurring in real chemical engineering processes.
