Department of Visual Communication Design

Introduction

The Department of Visual Communication Design has a goal of raising competent and future-oriented designers corresponding to new demands of the society in the digital era who implement professional knowledge over visual communication design based on creativity and the sense of shaping.

Handling deeply with graphic design, character design, video image design and digital media contents design, it is committed to cultivating human resources to lead the culture industry.

History

The College of Design and Art was first approved and installed as the Department of Applied Arts in the College of Family in 1968. The College of Design and Art has continued to revise and supplement its educational system to overcome its difficulties as a local university for growing and graduating many qualified students constantly.
In the midst of rapidly changing university environments to the social changes caused by informationization, the College of Design and Art divided the School of Art and Design to the School of Fine Arts and School of Design in August 2001 in order to construct an educational system that meets the needs of the times, in order to find ways to help the university grow.

PRACTICAL CHINESE(I)
This course is for students just beginning to learn Chinese. The most difficult aspect of learning Chinese is pronunciation. So, first of all, in this course students will learn how to pronounce Chinese correctly. Then, through topics of daily life conversation, students will learn the basic communication skills Chinese as well as basic grammar.

PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH
The aim of the course is to help students develop basic English verbal skills in real life situations. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with basic English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to practice speaking English utilizing basic English structures. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

2D GRAPHICS A
Finding new problems by bring up a problem about the role and situation of communication design in the social and cultural context. In addition, learning comprehensive design abilities which are appropriate communication skill, design knowledge, design sense, handling skills of hardware and software. (Point: Critical Ability of the Problem, The Ability of Finding Research Theme, Creative Way, Design Management)

2D GRAPHICS B
As the basic course of computer graphics for design, this class emphasize the learning of various expression skills of 2D programs. Students build up their ability to express ideas efficiently by using computers in the process of design.

BASIC TYPOGRAPHY
Based on the understanding of the fundamentals of the structure of Han-gul and the traditional definition of typography, the current expressive approach is also critically dealt with. develop an eye for selecting a good typeface, an eye for finding the typeface that meets the purpose, and learn the basics of handling letters, words, and lines for effective communication.

DESIGN DRAWING
This class is a foundation course for designing to understand the basic concept and principle of design in 2 dimensions and to do the mature design through the composite of design element. And to acquire a basic plastic sense through various representations in 2-dimensional plane and applications with the media.

SMART CODING
In this course, students will learn programming techniques, basic knowledges and skills for making a website.

SOCIAL MEDIA PHOTO AND VIDEO
This course focuses on understanding film and digital camera about photography theory, shooting and developing. Furthermore, students will edit photos to creative image through modifying, deforming and compositing on the computer.

VISUAL DESIGN HISTORY
Through this course, students learn the history of design in different times(designer, changing in design, social phenomena) and understand it's influence and importance

ACADEMIC ENGLISH
The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."

PRACTICAL CHINESE(II)
This course is for students who successfully completed Practical Chinese(I). Students should be aware of basic Chines grammar and can speak a little Chinese. This course will focus on a little more advanced grammar and expressions. Utilizing a variety of common everyday situations, students will practice what they have learned in Practical Chinese (I)

As an relative course of 2D Graphics, this course emphasize the systematic comprehension of composition principle and expression methods of 3D through the understanding of 2D expression methods of computer software.

In this course, students will have many practical exercises how to apply color to design through training color theory and understanding color culture.

In this course, students will learn comprehensive understanding of design and process of directing their own design.

The courses will help students to develop their fundamental aesthetic sensibility and creativity in design field. Students also explore a broad range of design knowledge and techniques.

This course is about practicing English presentation of research results and the design process in international exchange and academic activities in the field of design. and learn academic English used in the field of design through analyzing international data and foreign publications.

TYPOGRAPHY
Based on the theoretical study and case study of typography, the various theories of typography, such as the structure of letters, the principle of formation, and the correlation between letters and letters, are acquired and the design representative theory is incorporated to produce the design result required by this class. Through this process, we intend to complete the typographic application capabilities available as a basic means, from graphic, illustration to image, on a logically orderly basis.
