YU Documents ‘Regional Historic Wounds’ Records!

LINC+ project team regional cooperation center pursues ‘historical records’ project with local non-profits and press companies Highly evaluated for preserving community values and national records Professor Choi Beom-soon receives ‘Prime Minister’s Award’ from the government for contributions to national records management [January 21, 2021] <Members of the ’Corporate Research Association Shade: Shade and Them’ are in a meeting to organize records on Korean atomic bomb victims archived at the Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Archives> The historical records project being pursued by YU (President Sur Gil-soo) has been recognized for its value as national records. The regional historic/cultural contents investigation/collection/discovery/recording project being pursued by the YU LINC+ Project Team Regional Cooperation Center (director Choi Beom-soon) is being highly evaluated for preserving the value of the local society and as national records. They are represented by ▲the records organization and digitalization project for the Korean atomic bomb victims records at the Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Archives ▲Gyeongsan cobalt mine civilian massacre records production project. In particular, this regional historical records project is meaningful in that it was initiated and led by the private sector including universities. The project was pursued under the leadership of the YU LINC+ Project Team Regional Cooperation Center together with the non-projfit organization <Corporate Research Association Shade: Shade and Them> and the local press company <Gyeongsan Newspaper>. Center Director Choi Beom-soon (YU Professor of Japanese Language and Literature) who led this project was recognized for his efforts for the discovery and preservation of regional historic records and was selected for the government prize for his contributions to the 2020 national records management and received the Prime Minister's Award. <’Corporate Research Association Shade: Shade and Them’ organizing records at the Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Archives> <Corporate Research Association Shade: Shade and Them> is a non-profit organization composed of alumni of the YU Department of History. They are producing contents in the humanities for the social minority. They are discovering and preserving the records of those who have been socially alienated and acting as a medium to convey it to the public. This organization pursued a digitalization project for the Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Archives records together with the YU LINC+ Project Team Regional Cooperation Center. Director Choi said, “We have been interacting with Hiroshima, which is a sister city of Daegu, and our sister university since 2015. During this, we became aware of the issue with Korean atomic bomb victims and held an international academic conference on the date of opening the Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Archives in August of 2017.” He further explained about the project saying, “With the establishment of the LINC+ Project Team Regional Cooperation Center in 2018, we began pursuing the digitalization of the records at the Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Archives as part of the community contribution project together with the ‘Corporate Research Association Shade: Shade and Them’. Up until now, personal information held by the Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Archives, oral testaments, and tens of thousands of records were organized and digitalized, and a total of 33 collection books were produced. In 2019, they contributed to finding 11 Korean atomic bomb victims that were omitted in the atomic bomb victim records of the Hiroshima region in Japan. The Gyeongsan cobalt mine civilian massacre case records production project pursued together with Gyeongsan Newspaper also made significant progress. Since first covering the cobalt mine case in Pyeongsan-dong, Gyeongsan in 1994, Gyeongsan Newspaper published a total of over 500 articles on the incident over a period of 26 years. This report served as a trigger for solidarity among surviving families, fact-finding missions, and restoring their honor, and they helped to win the lawsuit against the state to bear responsibility. The YU LINC+ Project Team Regional Cooperation Center and Gyeongsan Newspaper worked together to produce video records of surviving families and a book containing the testimonies of surviving families regarding the Gyeongsan cobalt mine civilian massacre, and also completing digitalizing the photographs and videos. Director Choi said, “This year, we plan to complete the Gyeongsan cobalt mine civilian massacre records production project that began back in 2019 by publishing a white book. YU will take be a leading advocate in preserving and finding regional historic cultures and accumulate various contents to create historic and cultural value for the region.”

Korea Former Chairman Lee Jong-woo Receives ‘Order of Civil Merit, Peony Medal’

YU Department of Mechanical Engineering class of ‘64 donated 6.2 billion KRW in development funds for the alma mater and juniors Recognized for contributions to the development of education in Korea [November 4, 2020] <Korea Former Chairman Lee Jong-woo (fourth from left) received the ‘Order of Civil Merit, Peony Medal'> Korea Former Chairman Lee Jong-woo was honored by receiving the ‘Order of Civil Merit, Peony Medal’. The ‘Order of Civil Merit’ is given to those with clear merits that contributed to improving the welfare of citizens and national development in the politics, economics, sociology, education, and academic sectors in the Republic of Korea. The Peony Medal is the second highest order of civil merit following the Rose of Sharon Medal. Chairman Lee was recognized for his contributions to the development of education in Korea. Chairman Lee, an alumnus from the YU Department of Mechanical Engineering class of ‘64, donated real estate worth about 5 billion KRW in May of last year as development funds to his alma mater, YU. The university is using the development funds donated by Chairman Lee for renovating the science library, which was a key project of YU. Furthermore, Chairman Lee founded the ‘Songam Scholarship Association’ for juniors having difficulties with studies since 2002 where he donated about 1.2 billion KRW in scholarship funds. He thus donated a total of about 6.2 billion KRW in development funds for the alma mater and juniors. He also enacted the KAIST ‘Songam Future Scholar Outstanding Research Award’, continuously providing support for developing the domestic university education and research capacities. At 1:30 p.m. on the 3rd, the medal bestowal ceremony was held for Chairman Lee Jong-woo. At this ceremony were present the Yeungnam School Foundation Chairperson Han Jae-sook, YU President Sur Gil-soo, YU General Alumni Association Senior Chairman Koh Dong-hyeon, as well as former governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do who also served as the YU General Alumni Association chairman to congratulate Chairman Lee receiving the medal. Chairman Lee, who received a certificate and medal at the ceremony, said, “All I did was share a little with my alma mater and juniors because I wanted to repay what I received from our society and university. It is a great honor to receive this medal from the nation.” He added, “Practicing sharing even at a small level can serve as a lubricant to develop different parts of Korea. I hope that my juniors studying at YU can also do their roles in society and practice sharing." <Korea Former Chairman Lee Jong-woo (left) and Mrs. Shin Gwang-soon (wife of Chairman Lee)> Meanwhile, Chairman Lee also received a plaque after being selected as a member of the YU Chunma Honor Society on October 14. Chairman Lee not only made huge donations to YU’s development fund, but also serves as a director for the Yeungnam School Foundation, thus being recognized for his contributions to the development of higher education in Korea and to YU.

It aims at providing properly respectful treatment to high donors who contributed to the development of the university and to spread a new donation culture of the school. YU will select donors who contributed significantly to the development of the university and who are famous in society or have large influence among individuals and institutes (groups) who donated 100 million KRW or more in development funds. Members will be selected from both new donors and past donors. Currently, a total of 60 individuals and 23 institutes (groups) were selected, and YU plans to hold a series of plaque bestowal ceremonies for the individuals and institutes selected as members. On the afternoon of the 14th, YU held the Chunma Honor Society plaque bestowal ceremony at the Yeungnam School Foundation secretariat. At this ceremony, Korea Former Chairperson Lee Jong-woo, Bucheon Chairperson Lee Shi-won and Ilshin Electronic Industries CEO Yoon Sang-hyeon were selected as Chunma Honor Society members and received their plaques. They are all YU alumni who not only made huge donations to YU’s development fund, but are also directors for the Yeungnam School Foundation, thus being recognized for their contributions to the development of the university. YU has held a total of three plaque bestowal ceremonies thus far and gave plaques to 10 individuals and two institutes. Yeungnam School Foundation Chairperson Han Jae-sook, YU President Sur Gil-soo, Vice President Seo Jung-sook, YU Medical Center Director Kim Sung-ho, YU International Development & Saemaul Undong Professor Choi Wae-chul, YU General Alumni Association Chairperson Jung Tae-il, Hamchang Education Foundation Chairperson Joo Dae-joong, Daegu Bank, and the YU Alumni Scholarship Association received Chunma Honor Society plaques. YU plans to confer plaques to Chunma Honor Society members and invite them as VIPs to major school events. Also, when a Chunma Honor Society member operates a scholarship association, plans are to host a ‘Scholarship Student Invitational Appreciation Evening’ event and also install a members-only ‘Hall of Fame’. YU is already known for operating distinguished donor respect programs such as designating ‘Donor Classrooms’ named after high development fund donors. With the implementation of the ‘Chunma Honor Society’ program, it is expected to lead to additional donations among past donors to the college development fund as well as new donations from potential donors. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “The university if operating a variety of donor respect programs to commemorate the will of donors for practicing sharing. We hope that the ‘Chunma Honor Society’ will become a program that spreads new donation cultures to our society.” Meanwhile, YU plans to hold a Chunma Honor Society plaque bestowal ceremony for Samil Spinning Chairperson Noh Hee-chan on October 23. Chairperson Noh has contributed greatly to the development of the university through donations to his alma mater’s development fund for a total of 670 million KRW including the fund for establishing the YU 60th year anniversary monument.

YU Opens ‘Yoon Sang-hyeon Classroom’

Commerce and Economics Hall 207-1 designated as classroom named after Ilshin Electronics CEO Yoon Sang-hyeon Alumni of the Department of Commerce (currently Business Administration) from the class of ‘69, contributions to social development as an entrepreneur Extraordinary love for alma mater and juniors... Donated 300 million KRW for development funds [August 19, 2020] A lecture hall in YU was named after Yoon Sang-hyeon (70), CEO of Ilshin Electronics This is to commemorate his large donations to the development funds of YU and his contributions to social development as an entrepreneur. At 11:30 a.m. On the 19th, YU held a naming sign ceremony of the ‘Yoon Sang-hyeon Classroom’ at 207-1 of the Commerce and Economics Hall. A copper naming plate including a relief of Mr. Yoon’s face, history, and achievements was placed on the right-side wall at the door of the classroom. Mr. Yoon is from the YU Department of Commerce (currently Business Administration) class of ‘69. Mr. Yoon started up Ilshin Trading in 1978 and paved the foundations for insulation products and then founded Ilshin Electronics in 1991, creating a company that manufactures, sells and forwards electric and electronic parts. In 2002, he received the ‘Proud Korean Award’ from the Journalists Federatoin of Korea’, the ‘5th Yeongsang Academy CEO Award’, ‘designated as Model Taxpaying Company by the National Tax Service in 2005, and the ‘Korea Trade Research Association CEO Award’ also in 2005. In recognition of his contributions as an entrepreneur that contributed to the economical growth of the nation, he was bestowed an honorary PhD in business administration from YU in 2011. Mr. Yoon attended this ceremony and said, “It is an honor to see my name being placed on a classroom on the campus where I spent my younger ages dreaming.” He added, “The development of the university is essential to help students grow and develop to fulfill their roles in society, and I believe that this will lead to the development of our society and country. I hope that the students who study in this room will have big dreams and become leaders of the Republic of Korea in the future.” Mr. Yoon is famous for his extraordinary love for his alma mater and juniors at YU. He donated over 300 million KRW in development funds to YU so far and he has also been providing generous support both physically and psychologically by utilizing the YU alumni network. In particular, he took on the role of the chairman of the YU Finance and Economics Alumni Association from 2010 to 2018 where he played a centrifugal role for YU alumni in the Seoul area. The Finance and Economics alumni homecoming that began in 2011 and the ‘Cheonma Employment Alumni Welcoming Meeting’ held every year in Seoul since 2012 that Mr. Yoon initiated have become the most famous events of the YU Finance and Economics Alumni Association. Recently, he founded the ‘Cheonma Humanities School’ helping his juniors gain insight in the humanities. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “The entrepreneur spirit that our senior alumni achieved and the practice of devotion and sharing to the society should be passed on to our juniors studying at the ‘Yoon Sang-hyeon Classroom.” He added, “In accordance with the founding spirit of YU to foster ‘Pillars of National Revival’, we hope that YU students will contribute to social development and become members of society that practice sharing.” Meanwhile, YU has designated and is operating classrooms named after large donors to the university’s development fund since 2018, and the ‘Yoon Sang-hyeong Classroom’ is the sixth designated classroom.

Three YU Students Select for the 69th Police Cadets

Continuing the tradition of fostering senior police executives Department of Police Administration records 21 students for passing police officer examinations as students over the past two years [February 19, 2020] <YU students who passed the employment test for the 69th police cadet candidates (left to right: Kwon In-hyuk, Choi Won-joon)> YU (President Sur Gil-soo) recorded three students passing the 2020 69th police cadet employment test. All three passed the test while still enrolled as students. This test had 50 passers (35 general test, 5 women, special sector (10 from tax accounting, data processing and information communication)), and three in the general test were from YU. The three that passed the examination were YU Chunma Honors School Senior Kwon In-hyuk (29), School of Economics and Finance Senior Park Su-ho (27) and Department of Information and Communication Engineering Sophomore Choi Won-joon (24). Choi Won-joon, who has just become a sophomore, surprised everybody by passing the test just two years since starting college. Mr. Choi passed the written test on his first try in 2018, but was not accepted at the end. This time, he placed his name on the passer list by passing the written test, physical test, and interview. Mr Choi said, “While serving as a conscripted policeman for my military service, I became to understand the importance of the occupation of policemen, and I began to dream of becoming a police executive.” He added, “It was not an easy challenge, but my goal was clear and I studied hard, which is why I was able to pass earlier than expected.” Mr. Kwon In-hyuk said, “After passing my written test and during the physical test, I injured my hamstring, but I pushed forward through my willpower and completed the test.” He said, “Preparing for tests is a life of repetition for a long time and it is certainly not easy. I think that even if you are held back once in a while, the most important thing is not to be shaken up and trust yourself and continue persevering.” Those who passed the 69th police cadet test will receive training for one year as a cadet at the Police Academy from February 24 and then be appointed as lieutenants with other graduates of the Police Academy. YU graduated a total of three Commissioner Generals, which is equivalent to Police Commissioner, including Choi Gi-moon (currently, mayor of Yeongcheon), numerous local police commissioners including Seoul District Police Agency Chief Kim Seok-gi, and police chiefs including Seo Hyun-soo. YU expects to continue its tradition of fostering high-ranking police officials with the three police executive cadets this time around. Meanwhile, YU newly established the Department of Police Administration in 2014 (admissions quota of 40) and appointed professors from the Police Academy, thus receiving reviews that it operates an optimized curriculum for fostering police officers. It had visible achievements in just five years of establishing the department. In recent police officer examinations, nine in 2018 and 12 in 2019 passed (9 as police, 1 as railway police, 1 for educational administration, and 1 for general administration) while they were still enrolled as students, and one person every year moved on to law school.

YU Law School Opens ‘Bae Gi-won Library’

Library named after Former Supreme Court Justice Bae Gi-won who graduated from the department of law ‘60 “I hope it becomes a prestigious law school with junior judicial officers that surpass their seniors” Donated 100 million KRW in development funds for juniors in September [November 11, 2019] The YU Law School opened the ‘Bae Gi-won Library’ named after Former Supreme Court Justice Bae Gi-won (photo above). It aims at commemorating the achievements of Former Supreme Court Justice Bae Gi-won as a judicial officer and his donations aiming to foster junior judicial officers. At 11:30 a.m. on the 11th, the YU Law School named the existing law school library, Bae Gi-won Library and held an unveiling ceremony of the copper plate. A copper plate siting the milestones of Former Supreme Court Justice Bae was attached on the outside wall at the entrance to the library. The supreme court justice robe that Former Justice Bae wore, commemorative tablet and hand-written letters to his juniors are on display at the entrance of the library. At this event, Former Supreme Court Justice Bae Gi-won, YU President Sur Gil-soo, Law School Dean Lee Dong-hyung, Library Director Bae Byeong-il, General Alumni Association Chairman Jung Tae-il, Daegu High Court Chief Justice Cho Young-cheol, Daegu District Attorneys Association Chairman Lee Chun-hee, etc. were present to congratulate the new opening of the library. Former Justice Bae said, “It is very moving to see the library named after me at my alma mater where I studied passionately as a student of law.” He added, “I hope that my juniors will study hard here to become judicial officers that exceed my achievements.” YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “We opened the Bae Gi-won Library in hopes that students will remember the achievements of Former Supreme Court Justice Bae, who had reached the highest honor as a judicial officer.” He added, “I hope that junior students at the law school will also study hard right where Former Justice Bae studied to follow in his footsteps and become judicial officers who bring about justice to society.” Meanwhile, Former Justice Bae visited his alma mater YU in September and donated 100 million KRW asking to use it for the development of YU to Mr. Sur Gil-soo. Former Justice Bae was part of the YU department of law class of ‘60 and passed the 5th bar exam summa cum laude in 1965. He served as the chief justice at the Daegu District Court, chief justice at the Gimcheon Branch Court, and the chairman of the Daegu District Attorneys Association and the served as the supreme court justice from July 2000 to November 2005. From 2005 to 2010, he served as chair-professor at the YU Law School helping to foster junior students.

YU Wins 8 Golds, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze at the National Sports Festival!

Track & Field Team takes five medals including four golds, and Kim Myung-ji tops four events Competed as district representatives in judo, ssireum and wrestling, taking home a total of 13 medals [October 23, 2019] <YU athletes who won a total of 13 medals including 8 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals at the 100th National Sports Festival> YU (President Sur Gil-soo) athletes demonstrated top-notch skills becoming stars of the 100th National Sports Festival that ended on the 10th. YU athletes participated as district representatives for the 100th National Sports Festival held in Seoul from the 4th to 10th and won eight gold medals, one silver and four bronze medals in track & field, judo, ssireum, and wrestling to take home a total of 13 medals. The YU track & field team (Coach Son Sang-young, photo above) swept a total of five medals including four gold medals, proving that they are the strongest college track and field team. In particular, Kim Myung-ji (20), a sophomore in the Department of Special Physical Education took first place in the women’s 200m, 400m and 400m relay and 1,600m relay to win a total of four gold medals. Lee Hyun-jung (21, junior in the Department of Special Physical Education) also won two gold medals win the 400m relay and 1,600m relay. In the 400m relay, Song Yoo-jin (22, senior in the Department of Special Physical Education) and Shin So-jeong (19, freshman in the Department of Sports Science), and in the 1,600m relay, Kim Ji-young (21, junior in the Department of Special Physical Education) also won gold medals. In the 400m men’s relay, Baek Min-soo (22, senior in the Department of Sports Science) and Cheon Ha-rim (19, freshman in the Department of Special Physical Education) won bronze medals. In wrestling (Coach Kim Ik-hee, photo above), YU also won four medals. In wrestling Han Hyun-soo (21, junior in the Department of Special Physical Education, 97kg class) and Moon Jin-woo (19, sophomore in the Department of Sports Science, 70kg class) won gold medals, while Ahn Jae-yong (22, 57kg class) and Kim Ha-neul (22, both seniors in the Department of Sports Science, 65kg class) won bronze medals. In ssireum (Coach Heo Yong, photo above), Park Chan-joo (21, junior in the Department of Special Physical Education) won the jangsa-class gold medal and Kim Sung-young (22, senior in the Department of Sports Science) won the gyeongjang-class silver medal, while Lee Jae-seop (21, junior in the Department of Special Physical Education) won the sojang-class bronze medal. In judo (Coach Lee Jung-hwa, photo below), Jung Min-cheol (22, senior in the Department of Sports SCience) won the gold medal in the 100kg class. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “The students athletes had to work hard to keep up in school and practice. I am very proud of our students who were selected as regional representatives to uplift the honor of our university.”

YU Holds Commencement Ceremony for the Second Semester of 2018

Diplomas bestowed at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd 78 doctorates, 404 masters, 1,126 bachelors [August 22, 2019] YU (President Sur Gil-soo) held the 2018 second semester commencement ceremony at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd. On this day, 1,126 students received their bachelor’s degree, 404 master’s, and 78 their doctorate’s degree. Among then, 190 international students (53 bachelors, 108 masters, 29 doctorates) also received their diplomas. YU President Sur Gil-soo, Graduate School Dean Sur Jung-sook, and other faculty members of the university attended the ceremony to bestow students their diplomas and congratulate them. Saemaul Song Echoes in Myanmar... Learning Saemaul at YU!

Saemaul training program held for developing countries supported by MOIS YU International Development and Cooperation Center provides Myanmar Saemaul Central Training Center Instructors’ Training Program ‘Myanmar Saemaul Undong (MSMU)’ expected to spread nationwide and be followed by training for Saemaul instructors [June 20, 2019] <Public employee team from Myanmar takes a photo with students from Myanmar studying at YU after completing their Saemaul training completion ceremony> Foreigners singing the ‘Saemaul Song’ stole the spotlight at the YU Institute for International Development Cooperation on the 18th. The Saemaul Song, which was sung in both Korean and Burmese, was not only welcoming to hear, but quite surprising. The people that sang this song were public employees of the Myanmar agricultural and livestock ministry who received Saemaul Undong training at YU. They are also Saemaul education instructors of Myanmar as well. They completed a 9-night-10-day training session at YU to participate in a Saemaul education training program for public employees of developing nations sponsored by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The YU Institute for International Development Cooperation (Director Park Seung-woo) was consigned two of seven programs sponsored by the MOIS this year. The public employees who participated in this training received quite a bit of attention as they are instructors of the newly opened Myanmar Saemaul Undong Central Training Center. The government of Myanmar recently established the Saemaul Training Center that aims to foster leaders for rural villages with the support of the Korean government. The official name of this training center is the Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Training Center (AERDTC). This is a training institute under the agriculture and livestock ministry and employees and instructors of this institute are all central government employees of Myanmar. The group of trainees that visited Korea included people who earned their PhDs and master’s degrees in Korea, and others who spoke Korean fluently, thus having a high level of understanding on Saemaul education. The Myanmar Saemaul Training Center was modeled after the Korea Saemaul Undong Academy. The educational contents and operation methods are almost identical to that of Korea’s Saemaul Training Center. The song sung every morning at the training center was the ‘Saemaul Song’ that was sung in Burmese during the training at YU by the trainees. The government of Myanmar is currently carrying out Saemaul rural development pilot programs for 110 villages around the nation. What was more surprising was that Myanmar had already developed Korea’s Saemaul Undong to fit Myanmar’s environment and has been utilizing it by naming it the ‘Myanmar Saemaul Undong (MSMU)’. Five public employees of the agricultural bureau of the agricultural and livestock ministry that participated for this training YU are instructors in charge of training at the Myanmar Saemaul Central Training Center (photo on right). They are elite instructors that will spread the Saemaul Undong in Myanmar in the future and Saemaul develop in rural Myanmar. It is expected that invitational training will continue to be offered to instructors of this training center. YU Professor Choi Wae-chul (Department of Saemaul and International Development) held a special lecture under the theme of ‘Achievements and Success Factors of the Saemaul Undong’ for trainees from Myanmar. He said, “I was very surprised at the sincere and diligent attitude of the instructors participating in the Saemaul training, as well as their deep understanding on practice techniques and evaluation methods.” He also added, “Thanks to the community spirit of Myanmar characterized by dedication and serving, Korea’s Saemaul development experience will be shared quickly and in a more developed fashion in Myanmar.” On behalf of the trainees Dr. Aye Aye Thwe, who is the training director of the Myanmar AERDTC, stated in the completion ceremony on the 18th, “It is an honor to receive Saemaul education at YU, the world’s greatest education and research institute on the Saemaul Undong.” She added, “We will do our best to foster instructors that will spread the Saemaul Undong across all of Myanmar and act as leaders for the social development of Myanmar.”
