YU, degree conferment ceremony for the second semester of 2023

Degree conferment to representative, etc. of graduates of the graduate school in Chunma Art Center Chamber Hall on the 22nd Colleges and graduate school produced 69 doctoral students, 366 master’s students, and 878 bachelor’s students. [August 22, 2023] YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) held “2022 Second-Semester Degree Conferment Ceremony” on the 22nd. In the degree conferment ceremony held in YU Chunma Art Center Chamber Hall, President CHOI Oe-chool of YU and President PARK Yong-wan of Graduate School conferred degrees to and congratulated the representatives of masters’ students and all doctoral students of the graduate schools. Degree pendants and diplomas were conferred for colleges and seven special graduate schools such as Graduate School of Environmental Health, Graduate School of Culture and Art Design, Graduate School of Sports Science, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Engineering, and Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul. On that day, 878 bachelors, 366 masters, and 69 doctors were produced by YU. Among them, 191 foreigner students (85 bachelors, 83 masters, and 23 doctors) received degrees and 116 faculty graduates received double degree with double majors. President CHOI Oe-chool made a congratulatory message in the graduation ceremony, “The honorable degrees you received are the result of your hard work and dedication to realize your goals. I believe that YU graduates have grown into true intellectuals of this era to lead global innovation and pursue practical values of global co-prosperity. Korea is the only country that has risen to the ranks of advanced countries in aid through a middle-income country from an underdeveloped country receiving aid. Such situation ask us new living. I hope that YU graduates will create Korea with the dignity of an advanced country, and further grow into talented people to contribute for the common prosperity of the global village.”

YU conferred an honorary doctorate to KIM Yong, former president of World Bank

For his contribution in common prosperity of human society by overcoming poverty in developing countries and by developing world public health and medicine.YU is the first case that Former President KIM Yong received an honorary doctorate from a country other than USA. Former President KIM Yong served as the 12th President of World Bank.He led World Bank Group for 6 years and 7 months, from July 2012 to February 2019, and took the lead in ending global poverty, including development of developing countries and improvement of healthcare environment. World Bank was established in 1945 with the goal of eradicating global poverty and developing economies. It is one of the three major international economic organizations such as International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Trade Organization (WTO). Former President KIM Yong attended the conferment ceremony for an honorary doctorate on the 24th and said, “I hope that today’s conferment ceremony will be the first step towards achieving the goal of eradicating global poverty and achieving prosperity together with YU. I hope to do more for human society with YU in the future.” After conferring the honorary doctorate, Former President KIM Yong gave a special lecture to foreign students and faculty members at YU Park Chung-hee Graduate School of Saemaul on the subject of “Faith in Things Unseen.” In his special lecture, Former President KIM Yong gently told about his childhood, his growth process, and his 40-year global health activities. He shared his experiences in a wide range of global health activities, such as the process of promoting health project in Haiti and Peru Health Project in "Partners In Health” established by him, HIV eradication activities in Africa, and mental health problems in modern society, shared learned lessons, and got a lot of sympathy. <Special Lecture by Former President KIM Yong> Especially, President YOON Seok-yeol sent a congratulatory message to Former President KIM Yong for the honorary doctorate conferment ceremony. President YOON Seok-yeol said in a congratulatory message read by Chairman HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation, “I congratulate Former President KIM Yong, who devoted himself in development of developing countries and overcoming global poverty as the head of World Bank, on the conferment of an honorary doctorate in international development studies at YU. I believe that Dr. KIM Yong will make more passionate and broad contributions in solving the challenging tasks facing the global village today.” Park Jin, a member of the National Assembly, said, “It means a lot that Former President KIM Yong, who has contributed in overcoming poverty in developing countries and sustainable development of the global village, is receiving an honorary doctorate in international development from YU, which inherits the spirit of the Saemaul Undong and realizes the vision of a creative innovation university that contributes to the prosperity of human society. I hope that the honorary doctorate that Former President KIM Yong received today will serve as a great foundation for fostering global talent as well as individual glory.” <Commemorative tree planting for conferment of an honorary doctorate by Former President KIM Yong of World Bank> Former President KIM is evaluated to have prepared an innovative financial system to combat hunger in developing countries, built social infrastructure, and prevented global epidemics, as well as respond to global challenges such as climate change and refugee issues during his tenure. He greatly expanded the activities of the International Development Association (IDA), a development fund for developing countries under World Bank Group and dramatically increased the capital of International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and International Finance Corporation (IFC). The "Pandemic Emergency Finance Facility (PEF)” prepared during his tenure contributed greatly in prevention of the spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2018 and he implemented the ‘Famine Action Mechanism’, a hunger detection and prevention system using artificial intelligence. Former President KIM has been at the forefront of solving the problems of developing countries, such as poverty, disease, and social systems, not only during his tenure at World Bank but throughout his entire life. Former President KIM also directly established an international NGO (non-governmental organization) to support health and medical care in developing countries. He established “Partners in Health” in 1987 and worked for developing countries such as Haiti, Peru, and Rwanda. Especially, PIH has made a great achievements in fighting tuberculosis in poor countries. World Health Organization (WHO) has also applied the PIH model to create community-based health care programs. Since leaving from World Bank in 2019, Former President KIM has served as Vice-Chairman of Global Infrastructure Partners and has been constantly carrying out global social contribution activities, such as leading the development of social infrastructure in developing countries. Former President KIM was also active as a scholar and educator. He received his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Anthropology degrees from Harvard University, served as a professor at Harvard University, and held positions such as Chairman of the Department of International Health and Society at the School of Medicine and Director of the Center for Health and Human Rights at the Graduate School of Health. In 2009, he became the first Asian-American president of Dartmouth College, one of the Ivy League universities. The conferment of an honorary doctorate on Former President KIM Yong is noteworthy because his degree is awarded by YU. In recent one year, three national leaders at YU have received honorary doctorates in international development studies one after another. Prior to Former President KIM Yong, David M. Beasley, Secretary General of the United Nations World Food Program (UN WFP) and Yim Chhay Ly, Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia, received honorary doctorates in international development from YU. Their common point is that they have taken the lead in overcoming poverty in developing countries and ending hunger worldwide as the leaders of international organizations or countries. It is in line with the educational goal of cultivating talented people to contribute in prosperity of human society pursued by YU. The fact that YU is the birthplace of “Saemaul Studies,” which is internationally recognized as a native Korean study, is also the reason why they receive degrees from YU. This is because “Saemaul Studies” systematizes Saemaul Undong, which was Korea’s poverty alleviation policy, into an academic discipline and Saemaul Undong is currently being introduced as a poverty alleviation model in developing countries around the world. YU, World Bank, and UN WFP, etc. have been working in their respective fields with the common goal of overcoming global poverty and co-prosperity of human society. YU has been accumulating educational and research performances and know-how for more than 40 years until now. YU established research institutions and professional education and training centers as well as faculty and graduate school courses such as Park Chung-hee Saemaul Institution, Park Chung-hee Graduate School of Saemaul, International Development & Cooperation Center, and Department of Saemaul International Development, academized Saemaul Undong as a sector of studies, and has been implementing various projects in Saemaul International Development area. Especially, Park Chung-hee Graduate School of Saemaul, established in 2011 to nurture Saemaul leaders in developing countries, has enrolled 853 students from 73 countries around the world and, among them, 725 persons received a master's degree in Saemaul Studies and are active as major policy makers, international development experts, and Saemaul Undong leaders in central government agencies, public institutions, and international development NGOs. In a congratulatory speech, Chairman HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation (second from the right in the photo above), who attended the commencement ceremony, said, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude and thank as a citizen of the Republic of Korea and as a citizen of the world to former President KIM Yong, who has devoted himself to serving humanity. I look forward to sharing the academic achievements of international development in connection with Saemaul at YU with the world and contributing to co-prosperity of the global village through today’s graduation ceremony.” President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “Today’s honorary doctorate conferment ceremony is also a place to evaluate Former President KIM Yong’s achievements and honor individual achievements, but the world will be happier and safer as more global leaders like Former President KIM Yong were produced. Today's graduation ceremony was held with the hope that the world will become a happier and safer world. This is because the traces of world-class achievements and life trajectory by Former President KIM Yong are the ideal talents and role model that YU and next generations have to pursue. YU held 76th Anniversary Ceremony, “In the age of great transformation, all members should participate in the innovation

The ceremony was held in LEE Si-won Global Convention Hall of Chunma Art Center on the 15th and not only university members such as Chairman HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation, President CHOI Oe-chool of YU, Faculty Chairman JEONG Jae-hak, and Chairman KWON Ki-young of Labor Union but also Director LEE Jong-woo of Yeongnam School Corporation, Director KIM Jin-sam, and Chairman YOON Dong-han of YU Alumni Association, etc. congratulated 76th Anniversary Ceremony. <Commemorative speech by HAN Jae-sook (Chairman of Yeongnam School Corporation)> Chairman HAN Jae-sook said in her commemorative address, “Numerous universities are facing the grim reality of so-called cherry blossom ending. I think that this point of existence is the last golden time for university innovation. Universities should achieve full-scale innovation through selection and concentration. Let's gather the wisdom of all members and create a period of opportunity for YU to take a leap forward.” <Commemorative address by President CHOI Oe-chool of YU> In the commemorative ceremony, awards were given to professors and staff who have worked hard for development of the university in the fields of education, research, and administration. Long-term service awards were given to 102 persons, Excellent Chunma Honors Lecture Awards were given to 5 professors, Excellent Lecture Awards were given to 20 professors, Excellent Research Awards were given to 15 persons, Alumni Association Chairman’s Awards were given to 5 persons, and Songam LEE Jong-woo Achievement Awards were given to 4 persons, with congratulations. Especially, in the opening ceremony of this year, four professors were selected for contribution in development and innovation of the university through education and research and Songam LEE Jong-woo Achievement Awards were given to them. The awards were given with use of the development fund donated by Chairman LEE Jong-woo of Korea Former Co., Ltd who is the chairman of Yeongnam School Corporation.

YU Donator Invitation Concert, Finale with “An impressive stage”

Special performances to express the thank to contributors in university development including donators Harmony by YU professors, students, and alumni including orchestra and chorus “More magnificent and wonderful harmony than any other performances … Lingering feeling of emotion even after the performances” [May 19, 2023] <Performance of YU Donator Invitation Concert> Contributors of university development including YU alumni and donators gathered in the Grand Hall of Chunma Art Center of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) at 07:30 pm on May 16th. “Donator Invitation Concert,” a special performance prepared by YU, was put on the stage on that day. <Donators and alumni who visited the university to watch YU Donator Invitation Concert> The concert managed by YU External Relations Office and Department of Music of College of Arts was put on the stage to express the thank to alumni and donators who donated development fund to the university. KIM Jong-han, a honorary professor of Gyeongsangbuk-do Human Resources Development Institute (former Gyeongsangbuk-do Regional Public Officials Training Institute), who is an alumnus of YU Department of Literature (Korean Literature) and donated KRW 100 million of development fund in 2021 and expressed his emotion of the performance saying, “I waited with excitement for several days at the thought of watching a performance prepared by alumni, professors, and students of my alma mater. It was a more wonderful and moving stage than any other performances I have ever seen. It was a day that made my pride in my alma mater even greater as I saw and experienced with my own eyes the members of the university who were united through music.” Especially, in this concert, YU professors, students, and alumni, including conductor LEE Il-gu, composer LIM Joo-seop, violinist KIM Yi-jeong, pianist YEO Eun-young, soprano KIM Jeong-ah, baritone LEE Dong-hwan, and haegeum LEE Seung-hee, as well as an orchestra of 50 members and a choir of 150 members, presented an impressive harmony. Cultural and artistic performances prepared by university members directly for those who have contributed to the development of the university are not common. In the performance on that day, there were mother-daughter alumni on the stage that the daughter is currently studying in YU and they became a hot topic. They are alumnus KANG Eun-goo (Ph.D. graduate of YU Graduate School of Music) and student KIM Ye-ram in the Class 23 majoring in vocal music. Alumnus KANG Eun-goo expressed his feeling of participation saying, “I prepared for a performance with my juniors after a long time and memories of my school days were fresh. I was able to prepare for the performance with a joyful heart while practicing with my daughter. I am rather grateful to my alma mater for making wonderful memories of being able to stand on the stage with my daughter. I will support the development of my alma mater anytime, anywhere.” <University members and visitors are singing the YU School Song in the Donator Invitation Concert.> This performance was held as a free invitational performance for all seats and not only donators and alumni but also students and ordinary citizens who had made applications in advance attended and enjoyed the performance. Student Zhang Jin Chen (YU Department of Computer Engineering, 4th year) from China who had made an application through the university website said, “I made the application because I wanted to enjoy Korean performance culture and build memories while studying abroad. I couldn't hide my surprise while watching the performance on a much grander and wonderful stage than expected. Even after the performance is over, the afterglow of emotion lingers. I hope there will be many cultural performances hosted by the university.” PARK So-hyun, dean of the YU College of Music who prepared this performance, said, “Professors, students, and alumni of the College of Music prepared the performance by donating their talents to express their gratitude to those who contributed to the development of the university. I hope that the sincerity of the performers prepared with one mind would be conveyed to the audience.” President CHOI Oe-chool said, “YU members prepared the performances with all their heart in order to express their gratitude to the donators and alumni who devoted themselves to the development of the university. I hope that this concert will be a time of harmony for not only university members such as donators, alumni, and students but also all citizens who support YU. YU will take the lead in nurturing talented people who contribute to the development of human society beyond the region and Korea. I hope you to show interest in YU and continue to support it.“

YU opened “A Tracking Contest for Chunma Family to Visit Alma Master” with General Alumni Association

More than 2,000 participants including alumni and students, etc. walked around the campus, built memories, and fostered friendship among alumni. Unity of university members walking around the campus including Chunma Honors Park, LEE Long-woo Science Library, and Folk Village, etc. Eoulim Event such as club performances and busking, etc. by alumni and students [April 29, 2023] On last Saturday of April when spring rain falls, about 2,000 YU alumni and family gathered on the soccer field at the back of the gate of YU in spite of rainy weekend. They participated in “A Tracking Contest for Chunma Family to Visit Alma Master.” “A Tracking Contest for Chunma Family to Visit Alma Master” held by YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) and General Alumni Association (Chairman YOON Dong-han) is an event for YU alumni and family and all university members including students and university staff to unite walking around the campus. Chairman YOON Dong-han of General Alumni Association said, “It is highly meaningful to hold the alma master tracking contest this year, too, next to last year. I hope you to build memories and enhance the school spirit walking around the alma master’s campus with the family and alumni. General Alumni Association will stand at the front for development and good health of alma master and alumni.” The tracking contest was opened with a Korean traditional percussion band’s performance to greet alumni’s families. After watching the performance and after warming up, the participants started from YU soccer field and walked about 7km of tracking course including Chunma Honors Park, LEE Long-woo Science Library, main campus buildings, Falk Village, path of contemplation, and Dulle-gil in the forest, etc. for two hours.Busking performances and photo zone events, etc. were provided by the alumni, student clubs, and university staff on the Chunma Honors Park at the interim of the tracking course. YU PR ambassador students took pictures of the contest participants using instant cameras and delivered pictures of the memories on the spot. In the afternoon after the tracking contest, Eoulim Event was held for the alumni who visited their alma master after a long time. Eoulim Event was started with a beat performance and Chunma Cheer Team of YU General Club Association, dance clubs, and rock bank clubs showed performances for the alumni and the families who visited alma master after a long time. The climax of the alumnus harmonization event was made by the classic performance by RO Hee-seop, who is a famous street singer and is the director of INSIEM ARTS CORPORATION. President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “It is very meaningful to invite alumni working at every society and level to the alma master’s campus this year, too. I hope you to have a time to share memories with alumni you met after a long time while walking around the campus of the alma mater where you studied hard with great dreams in your youth. The alma mater will do its best to cultivate talents to contribute to the realization of a safer and happier human society. I ask for continued interest and support from the 270,000 YU alumni for the development of the alma mater.”

YU, construction of Chunma Honors Park to honor donor’s will

Sharing the meaning of sublime donation with university members and citizens … expectation of social expansion of donation culture Operation of differentiated donor respect programs such as donor classrooms and Chunma Honors [April 19, 2023] Chunma Honors Park, a donor respect park, was constructed in YU Campus (President CHOI Oe-chool). The purpose is to respect major donors for university development and to expand social donation culture by sharing the meaning of sublime donation with university members and citizens. YU plans to name plates, face relievo copper plates, busts, and seated statues of donors and use them as a honor dedication space to keep donors’ will for sharing. Some busts of major donors were moved from aside of YU Central Library. Chunma Honors Park was constructed in the forest between YU Main Building and Foreign Language Education Center.A circular plaza, memorial stone, sitting walls, decorative walls, and trails were constructed in 11,700㎡ (3,510pyeong) of area. Beautiful scenery and lightings were also installed for day & night rest places. The circular plaza at the center has a space for cultural performances including busking, etc. It is constructed at opposite position of Mirror Lake from YU Chunma Daero and is expected to be used as the rest places for university members including students and citizens. <Scenery of Chunma Honors Park, a donor respect park of YU> YU held the completion ceremony for Chunma Honors Park in the morning on the 19th. Chairman HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation, directors, and President CHOI Oe-chool of YU, etc. attended. President CHOI Oe-chool said, “It is the most important to remember the warm mind and values of donors.I want all members of YU to keep the mind of thank by maintaining the meaning of [Thinking about the source of drinking water]. Donors’ sublime will of sharing is connected with talents who contribute in joint prosperity of human society that is the model of talents of YU.I hope that all students of YU grow to be the talents to contribute in society by sharing such donor’s will.” Meanwhile, YU is said that it operates differentiated donor respect programs.It provides buildings and lecture rooms having the names of major donors and selects socially highly recognized and influential donors as Chunma Honors Members among individuals and organizations donated KRW 100 million or more donation and gives them certification plaques.Construction of Chunma Honors Park is expected to be connected with additional or potential donations for college development fund.

YU Cherry Blossom Festival was held for two days on March 31st and April 1st Korea’s representative cherry blossom viewing spots - Beautiful campus scenery harmonized with cherry blossoms in full bloom Various things to see and experience such as busking performances, outdoor art exhibitions, photo zones, and flea markets, etc. [April 1, 2023] Many citizens and students visited YU campus to see cherry blossoms in full bloom this year, too. “Nairamdal Medal,” Mongolia’s highest award for goodwill awarded to foreigners

Contribution to academic exchange & development between Korea and Mongolia as the Chairman of Korea Mongolian Society Leading Mongol Studies through active research activities as a representative musician of Korean Mongolian Musicology [February 27, 2023] Professor PARK So-hyeon majored at Korean Classic Music in YU Department of Music received “Nairamdal Medal” given by President Ohna Khurelsukh of Mongolia. It is the highest award for goodwill awarded to foreigners. Professor PARK So-hyeon is cultivating experts of Korean Classic Music and Folk Music. She has served as Vice-Chairman and is now serving as Chairman of Korea Mongolian Society and was recognized for her active contributions in academic exchange between Korea and Mongolia for more than 20 years as well as development in Mongolian Studies in Korea and expansion of research network between both countries. Professor PARK is the only musicologist representing Mongolian Music in Korea. She has been making active research activities with more than 60 research theses through field surveys in Mongolia for more than 20 years. She received “Medal of Honor for the 800th Anniversary of the Great Mongol Empire” with recognition of her contributions as the youngest female Mongolian scholar in 2006 and worked as the Mongolian Presidential Cup World Moringhor Competition Judge. Meanwhile, the award ceremony for the Nairamdal Medal was held at 6:00 pm on February 14th at the Korean-Mongolian Businessmen's Dinner in Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel. At that place, Minister Batmunkh Battsetseg of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia gave Nairamdal Medal to Professor PARK So-hyeon.

8,934 books of Professor Yoshida Yutaka, a Japanese eminent historian Documents on modern and contemporary political history and military relations in Japan … High value of research materials on modern history of Korea and East Asia Acquisition by Seokoh Cultural Foundation and donation to YU Library for historical development between Korea and Japan [February 17, 2023] <Catalog of “Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library” of YU Library> Central Library of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) published the catalog of “Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library” possessed by Honorary Professor Yoshida Yutaka (Hitotsubashi University), a famous Japanese historian. “Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library” consists of the documents on modern and contemporary political history and military relations in Japan collected by Professor Yoshida for more than 40 years and is evaluated as valuable data for the research and development of modern history in Korea and East Asia. Especially, it contains many materials with high historical value, such as diaries and experiences of former Japanese soldiers, and photographic materials. Seokoh Cultural Foundation (Chairman YOON Dong-han) acquired the books of Professor Yoshida and donated them to YU Library in 2020 to support relational and historical development between Korea and Japan. YU Central Library named them “Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library” in honor of the will of Professor Yoshida and Seokoh Cultural Foundation and designated as a library in a separate space in the library. <Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library> YU Central Library published a catalog of 8,934 books through preparations for three years for good utilization of historically highly valuable books. The catalog states bibliographic items of the books in full in the order of signatures and indexes of authors are attached for easy searching by researchers. Also, the books may be searched and the list may be found online through the cyber donation book DB of the library’s website. Seokoh Cultural Foundation expressed its expectation that the catalog becomes the motive to inform modern and contemporary Japanese history and military history, to set history right, and to encourage many studies. YU Central Library intends to distribute Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library free of charge to domestic-related agencies and to hold a special lecture on historical studies on Korea-Japan relations with an invitation of Professor Yoshida in around May 2023.

National medal of merits are given to the persons who have clearly contributed in people’s welfare improvement and national development by making contributions in politics, economy, society, education, and academic fields of Korea. Chairperson LEE (Class '73 of YU Department of Architectural Engineering) was accepted for his contribution to higher education development in Korea.Chairperson LEE has been supporting students with foundation of Wolsan Scholarship Society after donating scholarship funds to YU, his alma mater, in 2012 in order to repay the kindness of his father who passed in July 2011, and his mother. The scholarship fund donated from 2012 until now reaches USD 4 million. This is the largest scale among individual scholarships operated by YU. Especially, among his donations, donation of USD 2 million in January was surprising because such a donation was done on the line on his way to return to the USA after visiting Korea. At that time, Chairperson LEE Don called on President CHOI on the way home after visiting his mother in Korea for year-end and new-year and donated the development fund saying his intention to support development of his alma mater that was changing since President CHOI took office. The students of Wolsan Scholarship Society are active in all walks of life, including lawyers, prosecutors, certified public accountants, architects, and teachers. Chairperson LEE has been continuously making donations for Wolsan Scholarship Society, university development fund, and Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and has been making large contributions in the university and the alumni association. “Wolsan Scholarship Society” is a joint scholarship society named with the nickname of Sir Wolsan LEE Dong-ho and his mother Ms LEE Hong-sik. Sir Wolsan LEE Dong-ho Lee (1923-2011) is a 15th generation descendant of Sir Hoejae LEE Eon-jeok (1491-1553) who was one of Dongbang Ohyeon in Joseon Dynasty and has Chairperson LEE (eldest son, LEE Seung-yeon, LEE Jeong-hyeon, and LEE Hyeong (Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center Head of Business Strategy Department). Sir LEE Dong-ho was the owner of Daeseonghyeon, Cultural Heritage 34 of Gyeongsangbuk-do in Yangdong Village listed as a world cultural heritage in UNESCO, and Chairperson LEE has been leading preservation of cultural heritage by such method as restoration of 300-year traditional houses through historical research for 3 years with Gyeongsangbuk-do together. Chairperson LEE is a successful businessman who went to the USA in 1986 and founded Active U.S.A. Inc. in the next year. He is a bootstrapper who experienced difficulty to lose whole properties due to LA Riot occurring in 1992 but succeeded in comeback based on his accumulated credibility and excellent leadership. Now, he is taking Director of Pacific Bank (a Koreans’ bank in the USA), Leading CEO of The World Korean Business Convention, Director of Sir Hoejae LEE Eon-jeok Commemorative Association, Advisor of Gyeongsangbuk-do Overseas Counseling, and Chairperson of Chairperson of California Daegu/Gyeongbuk Homecoming Association Scholarship Committee, etc. He continued donation activities in spite of residing abroad and was selected as “No. 3 Honor Society” of “Social Welfare Funding Society” for “Fruit of Love.” Also, he leads global capability enhancement of university students in Daegu/Gyeongbuk areas as an overseas advisor for Gyeongsangbuk-do. Until now, he has been supporting enhancement of practical capability by inviting more than 100 university students as intern employees of Active U.S.A. Chairperson LEE also led foundation of YU USA Alumni Association which was founded for the first time for the universities in the south of Hangang River. At that time, Chairperson LEE took the chairperson of preparation committee and persuaded and encouraged alumni visiting main cities in the USA. Chairperson LEE served as the first Chairperson of LA General Alumni Association and then USA General Alumni Association.YU gave Proud YU Prize in 2006 and Honor Doctor of Business Administration in 2014 to praise his contributions. YU had a ceremony to give a medal to Chairperson LEE Don at 11:00 am on the 2nd of February. In the ceremony, Chairperson HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation, Chairperson HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation, Former President LEE Hyo-soo, and Senior Vice President PARK Dong-soo of YU General Alumni Association. Especially, the students of Wolsan Scholarship Society attended the ceremony and congratulated Chairperson LEE for receiving the medal expressing their thanks. In the ceremony, Chairperson LEE received the medal and the certificate and said, “I think I am here today based on what I have received from my motherland Korea and my alma master YU. I practiced a small sharing activity only with the mind to repay the society for what I have received until now as an overseas Korean and it’s a great honor to receive the medal from the country. I will try to play a role to contribute in national development as a businessman.” President CHOI Oe-chool of YU transmitted the medal to Chairperson LEE and said, “The sharing and social contribution activities practiced by Chairperson LEE became the motive power for Korea to become an advanced country and for alma master YU for development. I think that the Chairperson’s sublime meaning of sharing is same with the educational goal and meaning of YU to cultivate talents to lead development of Korea evaluated as an advanced country and the talents to contribute in common prosperity of human society. I will do my best so that such meaning is transferred to our next generations and our society.”
