Joint research on high-tech medical instruments and green energy sectors
Third in Korea following KAIST and Seoul National University
[June 1, 2010]

Yeungnam University will install a research cooperation hub within the campus to promote joint research with the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM). In 2008 and 2009, KAIST and SNU, respectively began pursuing joint research by providing a research cooperation hub within their department with KIMM. Thus the \'KIMM-S.K.Y Cooperation Center\' will be complete.

Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) signed an MOU for research cooperation with KIMM (director Lee, Sang-cheon, photo left) at the Law Library 2nd floor video conference room in the morning of the 1st.

Thus the two organizations will ▲jointly research and develop high-tech medical instruments and the green energy sector ▲exchange research personnel and operate academic-research cooperation courses ▲and construct a cooperative system for jointly using facilities, equipments and space.

The two organizations will install a research cooperation hub with KIMM in the Yeungnam University campus, and agreed to join hands in pioneering the fusion research frontier for high-tech medical instruments and the green energy sector. Through this, they agreed to work together for not only the success of the high-tech medical complex, but also for developing mid-large scale national projects, and finding next-generation national growth engines.

For this, Yeungnam University\'s 20 key researchers of project groups that have raised 100 billion won in national funding from last year such as in the \'Yeungnam University Medical Device Clinical Trial Center\', \'Metropolitan Economic Belt Green Energy Education and Resource Center\', \'Daegyeong Solar Cell Region Innovation Center\', \'LED-IT Fusion Technology Research Center\', \'WCU Nano Research Center, \'Mechanical Parts Industry Research Education Center \', \'Atomic Energy Basic Joint Research Lab\', etc. KIMM has also agreed to dispatch researchers in the medical instrument and green energy sectors.

On this, Lee, Hyo-soo, president of Yeungnam University, stated, \"I am very happy that we can cooperate with KIMM, which is a national research organ that is leading Korea\'s Intelligence-base,\" and added, \"This MOU has not only made it possible to foster talents and R&D in connection with the industrial site, but I hope that it will also be a research cooperation hub that can contribute in ensuring competitiveness for not only the region, but the entire nation.\"

Lee, Sang-cheon, director of KIMM, also stated, \"Academic-research cooperation is very important. This is because the great brains of universities and the R&D knowhow and infrastructure of researchers will join to make a large synergy effect.\" He added, \"If KIMM Daegu branch is established in Technopolis, it will become geographically closer, so we should strengthen our partnership and attract mid and large scale national projects so that we can play a leading role in creating jobs for the next generation in the region.\" After signing the MOU, Lee also presented a special lecture titled, \'Evolution of National R&D Systems and the Future of Industry-Academic-Research Cooperation\'.
