Yeungnam University-United Nations Foundation, Hosting of Joint Campaign
Foster the first partner \'Global Leader\' in Asia
[July 2, 2010]

 Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) and the United Nations Foundation (founder Ted Turner) will begin the \'Nets Go!\' campaign.

 The \'Nets Go!\' campaign is a campaign to raise funds to send mosquito nets with killing insects to Africa in order to prevent malaria, which is the number 1 killer of children in Africa. This is the Korean version of the \'Nothing But Nets\' campaign of the US, which has been led for the past three years by the UN.

 The UN Foundation is a non-profit organization that was founded with a 1 billion dollar donation by Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and vice-chairman of AOL Time Warner, to the UN, and globally prominent figures including Turner and Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary general are actively participating as members of the executive board. Currently, it has made partnerships with over 300 organizations and companies, 40 UN organizations, and over 100 national governments to champion for women and population, child health care, environment, world peace and stability.

 
 Yeungnam University became the first cooperation partner in Asia of the UN Foundation last June. And for the first cooperation project, the presentation on the \'Nets Go!\' campaign was held at the Yeungnam University Gyeongsan campus in the afternoon of the 1st and 2nd (photo). At this event, Andreana Rogalbo (28), director of the \'Nets Go!\' campaign and Ryu, Jong-soo, senior advisor, were dispatched by the UN Foundation to explain the aim of the campaign, how to participate, and future plans to students of Yeungnam University.

 Lee, Jung-min (22, female), a junior in the Department of English Language and Literature who participated in this presentation, stated, \"I learned today that one child dies from malaria every 30 seconds. I feel sorry that I was so negligent about the frightening reality on the opposite side of the world.\" She added, \"They say that a 10 thousand won mosquito net can ensure the life of a 4 member family for 5 years, so I hope that all of us pitch in and help.\"

 
 Yeungnam University and the UN Foundation is planning to hold a \'Nets Go!\' campaign launching ceremony in Seoul at the end of August. Over 20 students from Yeungnam University are expected to participate in this event as leaders.

 Also promoting internships at UN organizations and English speaking competitions together

 Ahead of this, an MOU was signed to establish a partnership with the UN Foundation in LA on the 12th of last month. On the day of the signing, Lee, Hyo-soo, president of Yeungnam University, and Ms. Kathy Bushkin Calvin, the CEO of the UN Foundation, vowed to cooperate in fostering global leaders who will take the initiative in solving global issues with a sincere interest.

 The \'Nets Go!\' campaign will also be jointly pursued as part of it. In addition, Yeungnam University and the UN Foundation also agreed to cooperate and promote internship programs at UN organizations for Yeungnam University students, and English speaking competitions on UN activities and global issues.

 On this, president Lee, Hyo-soo stated, \"A global leader should sincerely consider global issues and take the initiative to solve them with a cool head and a warm heart.\" He added, \"While fostering our students as true global leaders through cooperation with the UN Foundation, we will also contribute in enhancing the national prestige of Korea.\"
